Dave rides a 2000 TRX 400 EX

Hello.
I saved my quad from the back of a barn. It was in 5 gallon buckets and was taken apart because of bad smoke. The guy took it apart down to the cam and backed off.
I took it home and took it the rest of the way apart and found damage on the cylinder wall. bore .040 piston/rings. Put it back together and it ran.

Now I have valve clatter from an exhaust valve that is behaving strangely. It has about 1/8" play every other time I pass top dead center from the time the intake valves start to go down until they close. Clearence is in spec at tdc. please assist.
