Default ATV Choices

I'm fairly new to the atv world but have some limited knowledge. I bought my 6 year old an atv and now it's my turn to get one. I will be riding with him on beginer trails but also with friend on intermediate and advanced trails, mostly xc trails but some open areas. My two choices are an 07 400 ex and an 04 & 05 450r. All three are for sale in my area. I know that the 400ex is more than capable but something keeps telling me I should strongly consider the 450r for the enhanced performance, something I've always been a fan of. I know the ex has electric start/reverse while the 450s that I'm looking at are kick start no reverse. Looking for help from anyone with experience with both models and any advice to help with the decision. Looking to purchase asap before the three I'm looking at are sold. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the response. I was all set to go pick up a 400 ex that was in great shape but came across a 400r accidentaly. I was leaning toward the 400r but couldn't find one in good enough shape until this one. One owner barely ridden with $1,000 in aftermarket parts for less than what I was paying for the 400. Hope to get out on it this weekend. I'll report back.

Yeah 450r my bad. Got so used to looking at 400exs because I couldn't find a 450 that I keep making that mistake.

I was in the same situation your in back in June, but I ended up getting an 08 400ex and to me it has enough power to open it up and have fun. That's my opinion though, and I wanted.to have reverse with mine. And my 400 you really don't have to do a lot of clutching. Just my 2 cents.
