Default Help! Weird axle splines on my 400ex. Need help buying hubs.

Okay guys so I spun one of my hubs on my 400ex last weekend while I was riding. I went to Rocky Mountain ATV and bought a set of G-Force extended hubs for it so they both would match. The problem I'm running into is the new hubs are 24 spline (obviously) and smaller in diameter than my axles. Which is thicker and has 26 splines. It is obviously not the stock axle and my quad is highly modified. This is the axle it had on it when I bought it so from my research I'm assuming its a 250r axle? Around year 1988 if my research is correct. Ill post a few pictures for reference, not sure if they will be any aid. My question is, what hubs do I need to order? Durablue 4x110 26 spline hubs?

Thanks!

Not much I can do to help with this. Highly modified? Maybe highly screwed up! And you bought it in this condition?

I once had a 65 Mustang 289 V8 that was "highly modified". I did it myself. Bored .050, 12:1 pistons, 351 heads, yada, yada, yada. When I sold it I included a book. It had part numbers, descriptions, where bought, copies of pages from Ford Racing with suggestions, recommendations and specifics.

Go to the guy that modified it and find out what he did and why he did it. Maybe check with Rocky Mountain. Perhaps they can identify the fitment and exchange the hubs. But, it's still important to know what modification was made. Wait till you have to change sprockets or work on the brakes.

Everybody else - don't buy it unless you know what has been done to it and who did it.

I know your "here 2 help" but come on, don't bash me. I've had this quad for 8 months and this is the first problem I've had. A close friend of mine raced and wrecked and was in the hospital for months on end with spinal injury so I bought one of his back up bikes to help with medical bills. I know it inside and out but the axle and hubs look(ed) stock so that's as far as I've got with the rear end. I will call Rocky Mtn today and see if they can help.

Sorry about the bashing, but I get so many machines to work on that have been "modified" and the owners just don't seem to know what's been done to them. I get motors that are "stock" with Wiseco or Vertex oversize pistons. "Stock" rings won't fit those pistons. A guy brings me a TRX400EX that won't run right and tells me the problem started when he put a YZ450F carb on it. He says the bike he took the carb off of ran fine. Then he bitches when I try to explain the carb needs to be jetted for his motor and it will cost a couple hundred dollers to get it right. I guess I just have a bad attitude.

One thing I can tell you, the axle carrier is the same for the 88 & 89 TRX250R and 00 thru 12 TRX400EX's. Therefore, the axle out of a 88/89 250R will fit the carrier of the 400ex, but I cannot tell you the difference in the number of splines or the length of the splined portion.

Good luck

Thanks! I did find that those model 250r's would work but from your experience, does this look like a stock axle? Whether its from a 400ex or something else? From what ive seen most aftermarket axles are silver/polished. The 88-89 250r axles are 26 spline so im close to ordering a set but my only question is, are all 26 spline axles for this application the same diameter at the hub? Like I said in the OP the diameter of my axle is bigger than the diameter of the stock one, at least when comparing it to the hubs I ordered. So I'm hoping the more splines it has the thicker in diameter it is. Correct? IF thats the case any 4x110mm 26 spline hub should work, correct? I could order ones for a 250r, KFX400, Z400 etc and get whatever is cheaper. Thanks again for your help! Your sign name is spot on!

If you tried calling Rocky Mountain ATV and didn't gea a good answer, try calling G-Force Power Sports at 800-658-1843 or 561-753-3281 and see if they can help. I've seen lots of gold or silver colored axles that turn grey after some years of exposure.

I can't tell by looking if it's a stock axle. No, not all 26 spline axles are the same diameter at the hub. It depends on the depth and angle of the spline. Some splines are sharpa at the top and some are flat. Some are sharp at the top and flat at the bottom.

What I can tell you is the axles and hubs have different part numbers for the R vs EX and the R parts are much higher priced.

Thanks for taking your time to call them! I called them as well and the lady wasnt very helpful. I will give G-Force a call as well. I called the local Honda dealership but havent heard back from them yet. Maybe I can trailer it to them at some point Saturday and try to slap a few different hubs on. This is frustrating! lol
