When is the last time you had it running? Do you have fresh fuel in it? Have you tried putting in a new spark plug? When was the last time it had a valve adjustment? CRANKED ON IT FOR 30 MINUTES? Do you realize that cranking over 3 minutes can damage the starter motor?

The best method for starting in any weather is no throttle, full choke, crank for no more than 30 seconds, let rest for 3 minutes to allow the starter motor to cool and repeat if necessary. If unsuccessful after 3 attempts, spray some starting fluid (1 to 2 seconds of spraying should be sufficient) into the air intake while cranking. If unsuccessful after 2 attempts using starting fluid, seek professional service. It may have tight valves dropping the compression and preventing starting.

the last time i rode it was about 5-6 months ago. it does not have fresh fuel in it. and its fairly new i still have not taken it for its 25 hour first checkup. i meant i tried to crank it overall for 30 minutes. not at one time. whats the best starting fluid to use and what brand? where is the air intake located?
thanks for your help

Ok, just for the record; you have a TRX450ER.

The air intake is under the seat and is located on the rear of the top of the airbox cover. You could just take the top off the air box if you want to.

Since you haven't ridden it in 5 or 6 months, I'm going to guess the carb needs to be cleaned - valves should be fine - new spark plug would still be a good idea.

Drain the gas and put in some fresh 92/93 octane. Any starting fluid will work. Go to Walmart and see if they have any. If not, any auto supply should have. Using starting fluid you might have to throttle up while cranking.

Good luck

PS - I have a sister in Marietta, she used to live in Lawrenceville and I worked for a company that had a division in Peachtree City. I always wanted to try riding up Stone Mountain :P

I have a 07 TRX450ER i never use the choke i pump the throttle 4 times and hit the starter button it fires quick thats when its cold out 35degrees, but i do run amsoil forulma 4stroke 0-40 synthedic oil it helps in the winter, but if it has sat for 5 months your carb needs cleaning.

OK - The carb has an accelerator pump. Pumping the throttle will load the intake with fuel. Granted, that will suffice in place of the choke, but the choke will provide a high idle speed which is beneficial to a cold start by raising the oil pressure and getting oil to those pesky parts on top of the motor that need the oil so badly. Using a light viscosity oil helps also. We typically have 30 days or more of single digit or minus zero degree days. I run full synthetic Silkolene 15-50 weight year round, but my machine rarely sits more than a week without being ridden. This winter has been relatively warm (so far). This morning is 21 degrees, shouldn't get below 8 degreess tonight, then the forcast is for a warming trend and it might get up to 30 by the weekend. Yeah - I'm betting on the carb needing serviced.

Have you confirmed that the kill switch is in the "on" position? Start with the easy stuff.

Kudos Rockhouse66 - you are right.

Sometimes we overlook the obvious and try to make a simple problem difficult. My CR (as most newer Hondas) will not crank with the kill switch off. I cannot speak for the TRX450ER, so by all means, check to see that the kill switch is in the run position.
