400 ex starter not engaging

I've got a 2001 400ex, starter spins, but the starter clutch doesn't engage like it should, really need one bad!, Not sure if any other years will work, like 05 and newer or even 450's??!,.....need all the help I can get! Thanks

Starter clutch is the same 1999 thru 2007

Sweet, you wouldn't happen to know where I could get one at, like the starter clutch, magneto, and bearing? At a decent price that doesn't hit me in the pocket real bad? I really need one bad?

Unfortunately, most of the used motors in salvage yards are there because they didn't get maintained and the starter parts out of them is in the same condition as yours. I recommend you spend the $350 (more or less) and get new parts from your local stealership. If you just have to get by spending as little as possible, get an issue of Dirt Wheels, go to the back of the rag, glean the classifieds for ATV salvage yards and call the one closest to you.
