2000 TRX250 Top End Kit Questions

hope I can get a little guidance before I head down a road I've never traveled. I have swapped engines but never dug this deep into one.

I have a 2000 TRX 250 Recon that is smoking, runs like crap and very low compression. I think it was between 20-30 when I tested it over a year ago and parked it. I see these top end kits on Amzn for around $80 but there are multiple kits. How do I know which one I need? Do I need to tear it down and find a tool to measure the bore first?

For the kits you are looking at, you need to tear the engine down and determine it's current bore to determine which size kit you need if it needs to be bored - that can only be determined by inspection and measurement.

OF course it could be low on compression due to tight valves and the smoking could be bad valve seals - it's entirely possible there is nothing wrong with the piston and rings - that is something the mechanic determines based on what is found during disassembly.
