I recently acquired a 87 Honda TRX 350 four-wheel drive the thing has been garage kept and looks brand new looks like zero miles on the ATV so it starts runs good for a minute then it starts kind of backfiring and dies and won't stay running or bogs out I've changed the fuel system I've clean the carburetor I changed carburetor still runs the same with a different carburetor I'm starting to think this thing has a gremlin I'm thinking it's had this problem since it was brand new why it looks like it has no miles on it not one single bolt was removed from the ATV when I got it never had an oil change anything is probably been sitting in the garage somewhere

You need to try to determine if it is a fuel issue or an ignition issue - Check the fuel flow from the tank to the carb - should be able to fill an 8 ounce or larger plastic water bottle every 30 seconds (or there about) - if its not fuel, connect a timing light and just observe the light - if it quits flashing as the engine dies, then it is probably a spark issue - you have a new spark plug in it right? Don't draw any conclusions if the spark plug has not been replaced.

My bet would be gas cap not venting...leave gas cap off and run it. Next would be filter in tank above petcock... if it has been sitting up with no gas the inside of tank will rust...full tank with stable always.

Any ideas where to start i went to a low point on the wiring harness and cut back the black tape there is moisture under the tape

Check spark at the spark plug by grounding and spinning over...I don't think the river and wiring is the problem as mine spends most of its time in deep water...you have gone from tank to carb so fuel isn't the issue...I had to replace the
MODULE, IGNITION CONTROL (CDI)
30410-HM5-505
It had a weak spark that would basically drowned the spark when I gave it gas...idled great but also got to the point of intermittent spark where it would be hard to crank...I replaced CDI and coil and runs like a top...One other thing ...you say it is a 97 TRX 350... I don't see where they made a 350.....200, 250, 300, and 400...https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/a/hon/5053dc65f870021c54bdb2d9/wire-harness.... is a 97 300 trx four wheel dr....this link is models https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/c/honda_atv/parts.... didn't start 350"s till 2000

Yep - first TRX350 4x4 was 1986 - it was produced thru 1989 - Honda then dropped it - in 2000 Honda produced the TRX350 FE, FM, TE and TM - F indicated 4x4, T indicated 2x4, E indicated electric shift and M indicated manual shift - 2000 was the last production of the TRX350
