Oil pump issue maybe.

Rebuilt engine. New everything. New oil pump also. Put 1 full quart in the motor and started it up to let it suck some oil into the motor. Let it run a min and shut it off and went to add another quart and the tank over flowed. That’s how I’ve alwAys done it and it’s been fine. Gears are also on correctly. Oil filter was full also. New oil pump bad or am I missing something.

The engine was also dry when
I took out the drain plug
On the motor.

Did you check the oil tank screen? Put a pan under the quad and remove the oil line that connects the lower hose from the oil tank to the engine - oil should run out of the hose or hose connection - if it does not, remove the fitting from the bottom of the oil tank and inspect the screen.

The oil pump is a dual pump - small high pressure side and larger low pressure side - the small side pumps the oil into the engine and the large side pumps it out of the sump back to the oil tank. If the oil tank screen becomes clogged, the oil pump will not be able to pull oil out of the tank to pump into the engine. The large side of the pump is responsible for pumping oil out of the engine sump and back tot he oil tank. If the engine is 'wet sumped' (crankcase full of oil), when the engine starts all the oil in the engine will be pumped into the oil tank.

The correct procedure for an oil change is to start the engine and let idle for 3 to 5 minutes - shut off and drain the oil tank (draining the engine sump is not required) - you may drain the sump if you want to, but it is only necessary prior to engine disassembly - remove the old oil filter and install the new one - pour one quart of oil into the oil tank - install the oil tank dipstick - start the engine to circulate the oil and purge air out of the oil filter and refill the sump if drained - let idle for 3 to 5 minutes - shut the engine off and fill the oil tank to no higher than the full mark on the dipstick with the dipstick just set on top of the threads (not screwed in).
