Hey all I'm new to the forum! About 10+ years ago my uncle gave me a 1985 trx250 that he had bought in 1990. I have used it plenty throughout the time I've had it but the past couple of years it hasn't been running. I just ordered a key switch, ignition coil, voltage regulator, and stator for it and I'm pretty sure that the main problem is the stator. After I get the bike running I would like to rebuild the top end. Is there a high compression piston available? I would also like to add a bigger cam. I've heard that a Big Red cam has more lift and that an 88 300 cam is larger, can anyone confirm this?

I think you waited too long to modify it.

I can't find any hi-comp pistons, but Shindy and Cycle Craft oversize pistons are still available.
The Big Red cam is the same as the ATC/TRX250A/ES
The 300 cam will not fit the 250 head
The 300 head cannot be mated to the 250 cylinder
Installing a 300 top end might be possible, but may require machining of the engine cases

All in all, it's not worth it - for less than what the mods will cost, I can buy a newer and bigger model.

Good luck in getting it running and let us know how it goes
