I bought a 1990 Honda TRX 300 from a guy that said it just quit running on him. He said it had lost compression. I decided I will begin by doing a top end rebuild. Is that a good bet? Also when I went to order the rebuild kit there are 4 different size piston/ring sets for this model. How do I decide which is the correct size without measuring the old piston? I appreciate any and all help provided on this forum. Thanks Tim

You don't unless you just want to go to the biggest.

Now with that said, the 90 300 had the same problem as the 90 XR250 motorcycle - a friend of mine just bought a 90 XR250 for his grandson and the seller said it just quit running and didn't have any compression - the pics show what caused the loss of compression and then he found out there are no heads (new or used) available. I found a new head for $900 in Austrailia but the bike is not in good enough condition to warrant repairing it.

Don't order any parts until you know what's wrong with it! There's a good chance the 300 is in the same condition as this
250.
