We just bought a 400ex for 1800. It is a 2002 and it looked like it was in very good condition. My dad test rode it and he said that he was feeling jerkiness in the chain. We bought it and took it home. We rode it around and it started to make noises and the axle wouldn’t move. We rolled it back and fourth and the axle would free up. It is now setting in the garage. Any help?

The axle runs through a carrier that has two sets of bearings inside. The carrier itself is not round on the outside. There are four screws on the back of the swing arm that hold the carrier in place. You loosen these bolts, stick something in the slot on the side and rotate the carrier to loosen/tighten the chain. From the limited info I say bearings are probably shot. Carrier might be trashed as well. You can buy aftermarket carriers with double row bearings or just replace the bearings if the carrier’s good. Just fyi on the parts diagram, its #1 in the swingarm section. Theres also a big axle nut on a threaded sleeve that holds the axle in place from moving side to side. Ive seen those backed off, causing slop in the rear end and damaging bearings/ rear brake parts (caliper and or rotor).

This is a pic of the axle bearing carrier - the bearings probably need replaced at the least and the carrier replaced at the worst.
