88 trx250x bad top end knock/tick

i have a 88 trx250x. i just got done rebuilding engine, new rings and gaskets and seals, i got it all backed together and torqed to specs. started it up and its got a really bad top end tick/knock. i tore it back apart and had the piston in backwards, put it all back together again! and it still has the same knock...... any suggestions on what it could be?
