Ok so first off I have searched and searched and searched for an answer so sorry if people are sick of the same question. My trx400fwt is not stolen, I pulled it out of the bog it was stuck in for over a year, it is a long term slow rebuild project for me. There is more parts missing than there is present. I have bought a 4 wire ignition switch to replace the factory one. I don't know which colours to match up with the replacement part.
Replacement part is black, red, green, white with black strip.
wiring harness is black, red, pink, red with black strip.
Any help would be appreciated

You got the vin wrong - it is 478TE2002TA100489 - 1996 TRX400FW 49 state model

When the switch is "on" the pink connects to the red/black & the red connects to the black - when the switch is "off" none of the wires connect to any other wire

The switch you got will not work - it is for a 400EX - if you test it you will find when "on" the red connects to black and when "off" the green connects to the black with white stripe

Happy wrenching :grin2:

Thanks

Cheers for that mate, the part I got wasn't genuine Honda I was just going cheap and nasty to see if I could get the beast to fire up. Genuine Honda parts are like gold in New Zealand. I hope my frame number hasn't been modified...see attached picture. Cheers for the info:grin2:

Well, it certainly looks like a U, but according to the Honda ID guide, it should be a 0 - I don't think it's been tampered with, but it could be different on the export models. According to the Honda ID guide (Honda publication # 2GMAS00-AH) all TRX400's VIN's start out 478TE200, the 9th character is a "check digit", the 10th character is the year of production code (95=S, 96=T, 97=V, 98=W, 99=X, 2000=Y, 2001=1, 2002=2 and so on), the 11th digit identifies the assembly plant (A=Ohio, U.S.A., 4=South Carolina U.S.A.) and thelast 6 digits is the production sequence (95 started at 000001, 96 started at 100001, 97 started 200001) - so there is two indicators that yours is a 96, the T in the 10th position and a production sequence starting with a 1.

I guess only Honda knows if it's 200 or a 20U
