Recently purchased an 06 450er first time owner of any quad/dirtbike 4 stroke style engine. Id like to know what all goes into maintaining it aside from oil, oil filter, air filter. Also, recently broke my electric start and now it only spins, wont catch. Will push starting it hurt it? My new starter should be in early next month, until then I'm forced to push it.

Maybe that's a 2007 TRX450ER? At any rate, the owner's manual details the maint. proceedures. Check and adjust the valves as scheduled. Change the oil and filter every 30 days. Use oil API rated SJ or lower (JASO rated MA or MA-2) Bad news - the starter is fine - the starter drive failed due to infrequent oil changes (or use of oil not rated for motorcycle engines). You need a new starter clutch. Push starting it will not hurt it.

It had the oil changed, this happened (i think) because i tried repeatidly to start it and it wouldint go and honestly i dont think i had the battery charged enough, finally it just gave out. If it is what you said how much would that fix cost?

Typically you will need parts numbers 28115-MEY-670 (outer clutch $65), 28125-MEY-671 (one way clutch $79), 28127-MS2-612 (friction ring $4) and a clutch cover gasket (11394-HP1-600 $20). You may also need a water pump cover gasket, coolant, oil and another oil filter. I always change the oil filter whenever I change the oil. You may cheat on the oil change by tipping the machine up on it's LH side to avoid draining the oil, but this only works if you can avoid getting coolant in the crankcase when you pull the clutch cover off. Typically when the starter motor spins but dosen't "grab", the starter motor is fine and the starter clutch is bad. But there are a lot of parts involved. I have seen broken starter motor shafts, teeth worn off gears (there is like 3 gears from the starter motor shaft to the starter clutch), loose bolts and bad bearings that can all cause the same symptom.
