just acquired an 84 TRX 200 today. Got it running and it idles fine, has great power in reverse but it loses power and barely moves once I put it in first. Checked timing and carb. Hoping that someone here might have ideas on what could be happening. thanks so much!

Sounds like a clutch problem to me, however a bit more info is needed.
When you put it in first, does the engine rev but the vehicle only creeps forward or when you let out on the clutch, does it try to move forward only to pull the engine down and die?
Have you tried putting it in 2nd gear and slipping the clutch to get moving?
Have you tried moving forward with the sub-transmission in both the high and low ranges?
Does it make any unusual noise when trying to move forward?
