I bout my first ATV (01 400ex) a couple of months back. The last owner rebuilt the engine and put a new timing chain on that is one link longer and took out the stock tensioner. Put in its place a manual one and I have noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine. Could it be the timing chain not having the tension it needs? How do I adjust it?

At the risk of sounding terse, go back to the guy you bought it from and get the instructions for the manual tensioner. If the instructions for the tensioner call for installing a longer chain, then just adjust the chain as instructed. If the instructions do not call for a longer chain, , then replace the cam chain with the correct one and adjust the chain following the instructions for the tensioner that was installed or install the correct cam chain and a new factory tensioner.
