The motor only has a serial number and the same engine may have been used for several years. The VIN is 17 digits and embossed into the frame usually on a plate welded between the front frame tubes.
When I get to work in the morning, I'll check the Honda ID guide and give you an idea of how many models used that serial number range.

TE13E-8000001 and up was used in the 1987 and 1988 TRX250X - in 1991 it became TB13E-8200010 and up - 92 was TB13E-8300005 and up
