2000 TRX 300. When I try to start with the kickstart, I have to kick a few times before it "grabs" and actually starts. I don't think it's slipping where the kick piece is attached to the shaft but rather something internally. I'd this common?

Not a common problem, but a simple fix might be just changing the oil.

Part #3 is the retract-er (it pulls part # 2 away from part #1) - when you push the lever down, part #2 rotates away from #3 and spring #4 pushes #2 into #1 to engage the kick ratchet. if the spring is weak or broken, then it's a physical problem - if the oil is too heavy of viscosity or contaminated with water, the goo may be preventing #2 from sliding on the splined shaft and engaging #1. Before taking things apart, try changing the oil and be sure the oil you put in is JASO rated MA or MA2 10w40 or 10w30 or 5w30 - the viscosity is not as important as the JASO rating and the purity (no water contamination) of the oil.
