Hey guys dont have my wheeler yet but have always loved the EX line and am looking to pick my first new one up here shortly. Just unsure if I should get the 400 or 450r. I've riden Bikes and sled up here in NY so I have a little back ground in riding.
Nice site!

Welcome to the site. What kind of riding will you be doing mostly?

The 450R is a beast, no other 450 pulls as hard out of turns as the TRX450. The 450R is also a fast/high revving machine. She does not like to be ridden in low RPMs. You can but it takes a lot of clutch work to use the low end of the power on the 450R. The TRX is also one of the best handling 450s which makes it a good choice for a trail ridden 450 or a track machine. The TRX450R is the choice of many top notch Baja 1000/SCORE racers.

The 400ex is one of the greatest all around quads EVER. The EX will hang with the R until early 4th gear then the R will leave it. The EX has reverse and is so rider friendly it is crazy. You can hold 2nd or 3rd gear almost the whole time on tight trails. The EX can lug way down into the RPM range for the slow going area. It can also be upgraded to be faster and better than the R but that will cost you.

Both machines respond extremely well to upgrades and the aftermarket parts list goes on for days.

If you ride mainly trails I would suggest a 400ex because the 450r really doesn't like low rpms. Plus you have reverse with the 400ex.

I agree with both of these post I have had both. If you race 450R If its a woods ride 400ex the 400 will also be less maintanance. less oil changes and valve adjustments. I currently have a 07 400ex and I love it had a 450R but sold it because I rode it very little but I miss it. It all depends on you and your riding

Yea I used to ride a Z400 (Suzuki, same as honda pretty much) and I really liked riding woods in that thing. This Honda 450r gets pissed off at me If I ride too slow and will stall out sometimes if I don't use the clutch. lol

That's a little harsh... I have seen 400's with the 440 kit just handle the 450s. The 400 can go just as fast on the tight trails.

But when you get to the open areas it is nice to hit mid 70's on a stock machine.
