got a 2000 400ex the shift lever moves like it isnt tight on the shaft i tried to tightening the nut still comes loose was told i need to replace the shaft but i cant even get off the lever even after i took off the nut.... need help!?!?!?!?
Part of the problem might be that there is no nut on the shift lever. There should be a 6mm bolt that inserts thru from the top side of the lever and tightens into the bottom of the lever. The bolt fits thru a groove in the shift shaft which prevents the lever from coming off until the bolt is completely removed from the lever. Alas, severely worn splines on the shift shaft may prevent the lever from coming off easily. Sometimes you have to drive a screwdriver into the split on the lever to open up the hole which may allow the lever to slip off the splines and sometimes you have to use a small gear puller to pull the lever off the shaft due to spline misalignment.
