Depends on the severity of the noise - most 400's have some tick (mostly from the cam chain), but based on it's age, it's probably piston slap. The motors are quite reliable - I suggest running it until the noise gets louder making it easier to find.

2002 trx400ex picked up up for $300 new carb and it’s running, but seems to have some noise in the motor. I’ve cleared the lines the filter( although pretty dirty) was installed correctly, oil pump gear is on correctly and looks good. Where do I look next?
