Hello,
I have a 2009 TRX 250 TM that is in the assembly stage of rebuild. I have a brand new starter motor part number 3200-hm8-003 which is compatible for 1997- 2007 models. The 2008-2014 starters are a 3200-hm8-b61 number.
Can any one tell me if they are interchangeable please? From my research the splined shaft size and tooth count are the same and the earlier one fits the 2009, but nothing to say they are actually interchangeable.
I don’t want to assume it’s Ok in case I have missed something.
Thanks for your help,
Brett.

Depends on the model of TRX250 you are working on

The 250X uses part 31200-HM8-003
The 250 TE and TM used 31200-HM8-A41, but...................

31200-HM8-A41 supersedes to 31200-HM8-003

Unfortunately 31200-HM8-B61 may replace 31200-HM8-003 or A41 as the first 5 numbers identify the part 31200 is a starter motor - The next 3 digits indicate the first model it was used on - model code HM8 - the last 3 digits indicate a manufacturer code, color, change of materials or other change to the original design.

The 003 may have a silver center section while the A41 may be anodized gold and the B61 may be black.

It's best just to use the specified part.

Thanks for the break down on the part number system, the interesting thing is Honda went back to the early starter (3200hm8003) on the later model TRX 250 for some reason. The cases, reduction gear, idler gear part numbers are all the same from 2000 to 2020, and since they physically are interchangeable then surely it must work. If I didn’t have a brand new Original starter I would buy the correct part number.
Thanks.
