Hi all,

working on a friends 1985 TRX 250 Fourtrax. From the story I was told it just got back from a service and when they were riding it, it backfired and started smoking excessively (black smoke). It then stopped and wouldn't start again.

I assume it started again after it had cooled, as I was able to start and ride it today. Didn't notice any excessive smoke. I was told it needed a new piston and rings, but I'm not too sure. The compression seems to be okay at 170psi...

Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

I thought the oil may be over full, or the air cleaner cage missing, but it's not either of those issues.

First guess - it was running too rich, fouled the spark plug, the backfire was caused by the fouled plug, (the black smoke indicates too much fuel) - maybe they were riding with the choke on? If the compression is good and it runs fine - problem solved - enjoy :)

Most problems are simple - simple people try to imagine the worst.
