I have been doing some looking but i can not find anything conclusive to my question. I have a 1987 trx250x and it needs a cdi box. The question is will a regular cdi box work with it? It seems i can get a trx250 cdi for about 20 bucks but a specific trx250x cdi is over 100. They appear to plug the same. I just dont know how much different they are. Thanks for any knowledge on this topic. This is a very low budget build to ride while restoring my atc 200x.

The ignition module for the 250X was used on:
1987 Honda ATV TRX250X FOURTRAX 250X
1988 Honda ATV TRX250X FOURTRAX 250X
1991 Honda ATV TRX250X FOURTRAX 250X
1992 Honda ATV TRX250X FOURTRAX

The module for the 250/250SX was used on:
1985 Honda ATV TRX250 FOURTRAX 250
1986 Honda ATV ATC250SX ALL TERRAIN CYCLE
1986 Honda ATV TRX250 FOURTRAX 250
1987 Honda ATV ATC250SX ALL TERRAIN CYCLE
1987 Honda ATV TRX250 FOURTRAX 250

They are both AC CDI's and by the wiring diagram they have the same number of wires and each color wire has the same function, but what I don't know it the pin out on each unit or the required input and and output voltage.

It's unlikely they will interchange, but if you want to blow $20 and find out, then you can let us all know.

Well i might just do that. We used the cdi from the 200x and hard wired it and got the 250x running. I believe the trx250 will work but if its not the same volt/amps then it could burn it up pretty quickly. I guess to dig deeper i need to look into the stator and pulse generator outputs for both machines. Thanks for the input.
