Hey everyone I need help with my 1997 Honda trx300ex. It's been sitting for over a year. I bought it used and not running. It didn't have a starter on it or a battery or an airbox. I've bought those and installed them. I also changed the oil and filter. It basically had almost no oil in it when I got it. I have it running now and when I start it, it smokes a lot, white smoke. It's definitely burning oil. I'm wondering what it could be. I'm thinking its oil in the head, but why is it there? Should I let it run for a while and see if it just burns off? What to do next?

Yes - ride it for awhile to determine if the oil level goes down and/or if it fouls spark plugs. Heavy white smoke could be oil or raw fuel vaporizing in the exhaust. If the cause is liquid in the exhaust, riding it will burn it out and the smoke will clear up. If it continues to smoke, it might be a stuck or worn out oil ring. If the previous owner ran dirty oil, it can wear out the oil ring, but the compression rings can be ok.

I would guess either a ring problem or valve guide problem, but there are other less common reasons. It is possible that a chip from the transmission or something came through the intake and has caused cylinder wall damage. I have even seen carb parts break and cuse similar problems. Tear it down, find the cause and repair it. Good luck

The butterfly on the carb is broken. I bet a piece is inside. I am going to take the head off and start checking/ fixing. Any warnings? I've never broke open and engine. What about timing?
